A total of 568 votes were cast, showing a high level of student involvement and concern in a Presidential election which was widely regarded as "extremely close", with many predicting that whomever won would do so with a very slim margin of victory. Frank Crisafulli, a newcomer to the Student Association who has "gained lots of experience" and who offered "a change", challenged Fiorello, who has been involved in Student Government and campus activities for the past two years. However, the final results were a lot more (dramatic than the culmination of two well-run campaigns. SA Election Committee Chair Kevin Schuette confirmed rumors that there had been an "irregularity" with one of the voting machines. Schuette refused to give specific information, but SA President David Kissclback explained that a lever on tlie third row of the voting machine had not been locked, resullinc in several votes being cast for a non-existent candidate. Schuette told INSCAPE that every member of the Election Committee became aware of the problem after the first day of voting, and tliey all signed written statements which detailed exactly what the committee would do in terms of handling the situation. Jodie Fiorello told INSCAPE that the Election Committee informed her that llie margin of error was 8%, and Schuette explained that her margin of victory was large enough that the votes affected were not enough to change the results of the election. "We had an error factor that we deemed to be cnougli..every thing was liiken into consideration...no stone was left unturned when the committee made its decision. It was a fair election, otherwise we would have called for a re-election." Assistant Dean of Activities and SA Advisor Dave Render deemed the committee's actions "A prudent and fair decision", while Dc^ln of Students Mike D'Attilio, assured INSCAPE that, in his opinion, the situation was handled well. Crisafulli appealed the decision to the Committee, but they turned down the appeal on the grounds that their policy was established before the votes were cast and that they had promised to abide by the policy. Crisafulli told INSCAPE, :"If it's not a fair election, it should be done over...Maybe I did lose, but who's to sav they're correct." Crisitfulli haH the option of appealing the Committee’s decision to SA President Dave Kisselback, but he did not. Kisselback commented that "Not a significant number" of votes were affected. Maureen Netter and Katherine Close presented a petition signed by 200 students requesting a re-vote, but Schuette. turned the petition down as not "proper procedure", noting that many names on the petition were students who had not voted in the election. Schuette felt that it would be unfair, as "it takes about as long to sign the petition as it does to vote". Crisafulli and Fiorello were quick to point out that they felt the problem was not the fault of Kevin Schuette, but Newly •lectad S.A. Thank You From SA By DAVID KISSELBACK On behalf of the Executive Board and the Student Assembly I would like to thank you for your support. Many hours of hard work were put into this year to get the students involved. I first would like to thank all the students who took part in the many events held this year. It showed support for those who planned them and gave you the opportunity to see where your money goes. Thank you for your time and support. Thank you to the staff -and all involved with maintenance and housekeeping. Without your help and hard work many of our functions would not have happened. We appreciate your time and dedication to the students. I thank the administration for your support and guidance. Thank you for letting us plan and organize events that you did not always agree with. It is always a learning experience, for both of us. One of the biggeest THANK YOU'S goes to the Student Affairs office. For your time, advice and hours upon hours of work. You have helped with so many of our events and have given us the much needed encouragement in order to survive. Words alone cannot give all the thanks you so rightly deserve. Thank you one and all for your faith, support, time and most of all your participation.________________ ____
